Free rail travel this Remembrance weekend

Bereaved military families will be able to travel free of charge on National Rail services to attend Remembrance events this November.

The Government has announced that, for the first time, one next of kin of a service person who died while serving will be eligible for free rail travel during Remembrance weekend, on 7 and 8 November 2026.

The scheme is intended to help bereaved relatives attend memorial services and commemorative events across Britain, including the national Remembrance Sunday service at the Cenotaph, without the cost of rail travel being a barrier.

The new offer builds on existing arrangements providing free rail travel for serving Armed Forces personnel and veterans attending Remembrance events.

Eligible bereaved family members who wish to use the offer must apply by 16 October 2026 for their free ticket through the Defence Medical Welfare Service.

Further information about the scheme and eligibility is available on GOV.UK.
