New play celebrating community, culture, caravans and peas coming this month

East Riding Libraries have partnered with Mikron Theatre to create a travelling play all about the East Riding of Yorkshire.

Starting this month, ‘Top of the Wold’ will begin its tour around the East Riding, visiting villages, towns and coastal communities, sharing a unique story, shaped by the people of this region.

Playwright Maeve Larkin has crafted a production that reflects the voices and rich experiences of local communities, her research included extensive conversations with local groups as well as visits to towns and villages across the area.

The one-of-a-kind play will be bursting with original songs and follow four actor-musicians as the mobile library dives into chapters that teem with the lives of then and now.

From Bempton to Bridlington, Hornsea to Howden, the play explores a region barely noticed by the nation it feeds and eroded by the pounding North Sea.

The play has been a collaborative effort to produce with local community groups not only shaping the script but getting involved in other ways too. ‘Cuppa & Chorus’ will be learning original songs from the play and the ‘Knit & Natter’ groups are supporting by knitting intricate pieces that show what the East Riding means to local people, creating displays for our libraries.

After travelling the East Riding ‘Top of the Wold’ will embark on a national tour, sharing the love for the East Riding in Manchester, Sheffield, South Hambledon and Portsmouth, with many more cities to be announced.

Councillor Nick Coultish, cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: ‘’This new and exciting play brings together a rich mix of perspectives and themes from across the East Riding, inspired by the author’s encounters with local people.

‘’We look forward to seeing those from near and far enjoy the performances and are confident that the play will be a huge success both locally and nationally.’’

Marianne McNamara, director of ‘Top of the Wold’, added: “‘Top of the Wold’ is a vibrant ode to the East Riding. It’s Mikron’s tradition to shine a light on unsung heroes and places and our team has worked exceptionally hard to bring these fantastic stories to life.’’
