Supporting People with Dementia and Other Vulnerabilities – Alzheimer’s Society

Course overview: This course will raise awareness and understanding of dementia and provide an overview of other conditions, such as Down’s Syndrome, autism and mental health.

Learning outcomes

  • you will have an increased awareness of common cognitive difficulties such as learning disabilities, autism, Down’s syndrome and mental health
  • understand how cognitive difficulties impact a person’s capacity to make decisions.
  • Provide you with practical techniques that can be used when you engage with someone with cognitive difficulties to ensure their experience is a positive one
  • Explore ways to communicate effectively with people who may have cognitive difficulties

Trauma-Informed Practice for Safeguarding Adults Training – NAPAC

🗓 Thursday 15 October 2026  9:00 am – 5:00 pm 📍 Church Square House

🗓 Monday 21 September 2026  1:00 pm – 4:00 pm📍MS Teams

Course overview: This training is facilitated by NAPAC (National Association for People Abused in Childhood), a UK charity specialising in the impact of trauma and abuse and the development of trauma-informed practice across services and systems.

The training will explore the foundations of trauma-informed practice, including the key principles of safety, trust, choice, collaboration and empowerment. Participants will examine how:

  • trauma influences behaviour
  • relationships and engagement, particularly in complex safeguarding contexts.

A central focus will be on applying trauma-informed thinking in practice, including how professionals interpret behaviour, make decisions and record information.

Learning outcomes

  • Understand the core principles of trauma-informed practice and their relevance to safeguarding work Recognise how trauma can shape behaviour, engagement and presentation across service users
  • Apply trauma-informed thinking to assessment, decision-making and case formulation
  • Strengthen consistency in how trauma is reflected in case recording and use appropriate language
  • Improve responses to complex presentations such as self-neglect, homelessness and substance use
  • Reflect on the impact of vicarious trauma and identify strategies for sustaining wellbeing in practice

**This course is CPD accredited and CPD certificates will be provided following your attendance.

Changes to legislation – Crime and Policing Act 2026 

The new Crime and Policing Act 2026 creates a new standalone offences to:​

  • prosecute adults committing child criminal exploitation (CCE)​
  • tackle the practice known as ‘cuckooing’ (home takeover)​
  • prosecute perpetrators who conceal an item inside a person’s body or intentionally cause and/or coerce, compel or deceive someone, either adult or child, to conceal a specified item within their body for a criminal purpose

The Home Office and MoJ have developed a number of factsheets which provide more information about the Crime and Policing Act 2026.
