Scunthorpe residents invited to shape their town’s future and influence how the £20 Million Plan for Neighbourhoods is invested

A series of NeighbourhoodLAB events is taking place across Scunthorpe to embed a new, ground-up approach to community engagement and future development of the town.

Being delivered in partnership with North Lincolnshire Council, supported by a dedicated Neighbourhood Board, and with Scunthorpe Tomorrow and Community Vision driving community engagement, the ten NeighbourhoodLABs that are taking place over September and October are part of the government-funded Plan for Neighbourhoods and the first step towards bringing a new vision for Scunthorpe to life.

A £20 million programme, the Plan for Neighbourhoods is designed to empower local residents, ensuring their voices are at the heart of Scunthorpe’s long-term vision, and contributing to how this important funding is invested over the next decade.

Unlike traditional top-down development models, the Plan for Neighbourhoods project is a direct opportunity for residents to actively participate in shaping their own future. Through a series of in-person NeighbourhoodLAB events and an accessible online survey, the initiative will gather essential community views, guiding how and where the substantial £20 million in funding is spent. This collaborative, bottom-up approach will ensure decisions are made with the community’s direct input and benefit at heart.

The significance of this project cannot be overstated. By channelling community conversations and activities, the NeighbourhoodLABs aim to spearhead crucial action and transform Scunthorpe into the town its residents want it to be. This ten-year neighbourhood plan is set to build on previous initiatives, including Scunthorpe Tomorrow’s PlaceLAB 1, 2, and 3 and the Community Cohesion Project, to bring people from diverse backgrounds together to make a tangible difference.

This is more than just a funding programme; it’s a commitment to attracting new investment, retaining local talent, and welcoming back those who have left. The NeighbourhoodLAB events are literally opening the doors to everyone in Scunthorpe so the community can have its say and contribute to building a stronger, more vibrant community for the future.

Shaping this vision starts by listening to the community

As this collective continues along a path to build connections, drive action and change the narrative, this series of NeighbourhoodLABs isn’t the only engagement event in the pipeline. A fourth PlaceLAB and YouthLAB are also taking place in October.

PlaceLAB4: Taking place on October 10th, 8.30am-1pm, at Heslam Park, this PlaceLAB will build on the work accomplished in the previous three LABs, as well as provide a platform where the emerging themes and ideas gathered from the first NeighbourhoodLABs can be discussed.

YouthLAB: A special event for young people and the first of its kind to be delivered locally, the YouthLAB will be hosted at Oasis Community Space, on October 11th, 12.30-5pm. Not just another workshop, this event is about fun, creativity, and empowerment. It’s a chance for young people to shape the future of their neighbourhoods – exploring ideas and helping us to plan how their area grows and evolves. With Scunthorpe Tomorrow, North Lincolnshire Council, Community Vision and North Lincolnshire Youth Activity Partnership, working in partnership, this is a chance for young people to bring their ideas to life and have a real say in how £20 million could be spent locally as part of the Plan for Neighbourhoods.

The power when people come together to make something meaningful happen is undeniable. This is an opportunity for everyone who lives and works in Scunthorpe to be a part of that legacy.

About Scunthorpe Tomorrow: Scunthorpe Tomorrow is a network of people who are passionate about Scunthorpe and North Lincolnshire. Established by Rob Allen and Tyrone Curran in June 2023 to provide a forum for people from Scunthorpe and North Lincolnshire – current residents and those now living elsewhere – Scunthorpe Tomorrow is a platform for those who want to connect and be part of a conversation about the future of our community. The Scunthorpe Tomorrow team has been inspired by and seeks to learn from other places that have successfully mobilised similar networks, including Grimsby and Stoke-on-Trent, while recognising what is different and special about our area. Through building on our strengths, we are committed to helping deliver a better future for our community by embedding a new ground-up approach to community engagement.
