Victims of domestic abuse in the East Riding are being encouraged to seek advice and support during the World Cup period.
Research shows that incidents of domestic abuse often rise around big matches, especially when alcohol is involved and emotions run high. When a team loses, some people channel frustration into harmful behaviour at home.
Residents who feel concerned for their own or someone else’s safety during this period are encouraged to reach out to the East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Domestic Violence and Abuse Partnership (DVAP).
DVAP provide support for both adult and child victims of domestic abuse, as well as those whose behaviour is abusive and want to change.
Support is consent based and confidential meaning information will only be shared if there are safeguarding risks to adults or children or to stop serious criminal offences being committed.
Councillor Lyn Healing, East Riding of Yorkshire Council cabinet member for communities and public protection said: “Sport should bring people together, not put women and girls at greater risk.”
However, we sadly know that there is an increased risk of domestic violence and abuse during this period. Nobody should suffer alone and the council’s DVAP website provides information and support. In urgent matters, where there is a belief of immediate danger, always call the police on 999.”
Professional and self-referrals (calling about your own situation) can be made by calling 01482 396368 or completing the online DVAP self-referral form.
The DVAP team, work with housing for anyone placed in temporary accommodation due to domestic abuse and will offer emotional support to those dispersed from home.
If you need immediate support in an emergency or are concerned for your own or someone else’s immediate safety, please always ring the Police on 999.
Alternatively, you can ring the Police for a non-emergency on 101.
