Support available to ‘hidden carers’ in the East Riding

Hidden carers provide unpaid support to family, friends and neighbours with disabilities or mental health challenges.

The care can take many different forms and can include personal care, emotional support, help with managing finances and assistance with everyday tasks.

There are many hidden carers within the East Riding of Yorkshire who come from all walks of life including young carers, carers from ethnic minority communities and LGBTQ+ carers.

Caring tasks and responsibilities vary for each individual, but it is important to consider the impact this has on the carer’s emotional and mental health and wellbeing. Although caring for people can be very rewarding, it can often be very difficult at times, and the Carers Support Service is here to help people.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Carers Support Service can provide people with personalised information, advice and support about:

  • Your rights as a carer
  • Carers Assessment
  • Carers Services in the East Riding
  • Carer related benefits
  • Local, regional and national sources of Carers Support
  • Contact details for other organisations that may be useful to you as a carer

When carers register with the Carers Support Service, they will receive the quarterly ‘We Care’ newsletter and can access advice, information and support groups.

After getting in touch with the Carers Support Service, Linda James from Flamborough said: ‘’I am impressed with the speed with which I have been given advice and access to services, and it has given me great peace of mind for which I am extremely grateful.’’

Councillor Jonathan Owen, cabinet member for adults, health and care at East Riding of Yorkshire Council said: ‘’Hidden carers care for those around them because they want to help, but the act of caring can make people feel lonely and unable to continue with the demands placed upon them.

‘’The Carers Support Service does a fantastic job of assisting carers and providing essential support to those who help the most vulnerable members of our communities.’’
