Struggling in the water? Float to live

This message has been posted on behalf of Humberside Fire & Rescue Service.

In 2024 alone, 249 lives were lost to accidental drowning across the UK and Ireland.

The Humber region is a stunning place to explore, with its beautiful coastline, rivers and lakes. But water can be unpredictable and dangerous. Even on a warm, sunny day, the water remains very cold – cold-water shock can have deadly consequences.

Remember: Float to Live

If you’re in trouble in the water:
🔹 Tilt your head back, keeping ears submerged
🔹 Relax and breathe normally
🔹 Spread arms and legs to stay afloat
🔹 Once calm, call for help or swim to safety

Water safety tips:
✅ Follow warning and safety signs
✅ Let someone know where you’re going if heading out alone
✅ Watch out for slip or trip hazards near water
✅ Stay clear of unstable riverbanks and cliff edges

If someone falls into deep water:
📞 Call 999 immediately for emergency help
📍 Use the What3Words app to share your exact location
🌊 Never enter the water to try to save someone.
