In 2024 alone, 249 lives were lost to accidental drowning across the UK and Ireland.
The Humber region is a stunning place to explore, with its beautiful coastline, rivers and lakes. But water can be unpredictable and dangerous. Even on a warm, sunny day, the water remains very cold – cold-water shock can have deadly consequences.
Remember: Float to Live
If you’re in trouble in the water: Tilt your head back, keeping ears submerged
Relax and breathe normally
Spread arms and legs to stay afloat
Once calm, call for help or swim to safety
Water safety tips: Follow warning and safety signs
Let someone know where you’re going if heading out alone
Watch out for slip or trip hazards near water
Stay clear of unstable riverbanks and cliff edges
If someone falls into deep water: Call 999 immediately for emergency help
Use the What3Words app to share your exact location
Never enter the water to try to save someone.
