Almost 7 million adults have never checked their State Pension forecast

Almost seven million UK adults have never checked their State Pension forecast, according to new research from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

The research found that one in eight adults (12.5%) have never checked what they could receive from their State Pension. People aged 45 to 54 were the most likely age group not to have checked, despite this being an important period for retirement planning.

Some of the main reasons people gave for putting it off included feeling that retirement was still too far away, concerns about losing track of workplace pensions from previous jobs and uncertainty about how career breaks could affect their entitlement. Around one in ten said they did not know how to check their forecast.

HMRC is encouraging people to use its free app to check their State Pension forecast. The service can show how much State Pension someone may receive, when they could receive it and whether there are gaps in their National Insurance record. Where eligible, people may also be able to make voluntary contributions to fill gaps.

Checking your forecast can help identify potential issues early and give you a clearer picture when planning for retirement.
