A remarkable 101-year-old woman from Yorkshire is proving that age is no barrier to embracing technology, thanks to the support of digital inclusion charity AbilityNet.
As part of Get Online Week 2026 (19–25 October), AbilityNet has shared the inspiring story of Doreen, a 101-year-old from Wetherby, who is making the most of digital technology to stay connected, independent and engaged with the world around her.
With support from AbilityNet volunteer David Power, Doreen has developed the confidence to use a range of devices, including her laptop, iPad, iPhone and smartwatch.
From watching Sunday church services online to keeping in touch with friends and family, technology has become an important part of her everyday life.
As Doreen explains:
“You miss so much if you don’t [use tech].”
Her story is a wonderful reminder that learning new digital skills is possible at any age, particularly when people have access to patient, friendly and practical support.
Celebrating the Work of AbilityNet
AbilityNet is a national charity dedicated to making the digital world accessible to everyone, particularly older people and disabled people.
Through its network of technology volunteers, the charity provides free, personalised support to help individuals overcome barriers to using technology.
The difference this support makes is clear. According to AbilityNet’s 2025 impact figures:
- 98% of people supported felt better able to use technology at home.
- 92% reported increased confidence in using technology.
- 90% became more independent.
- 83% felt less isolated.
These figures highlight the importance of providing accessible digital support that meets people’s individual needs.
Supporting Digital Inclusion in Our Communities
At Community VISION, we recognise the importance of ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to benefit from digital technology.
Through our Digital Inclusion for All project in the East Riding of Yorkshire, we are working with community organisations and local partners to help residents develop their digital skills and confidence.
Doreen’s story reflects the importance of this work and demonstrates how digital inclusion can support independence, reduce isolation and help people stay connected to the things that matter most.
We are delighted to celebrate the work of AbilityNet and its volunteers, whose dedication continues to make a difference to people’s lives.
