Curious about what really goes on inside UK prisons? Want to stand up for justice, dignity, and humane treatment for everyone, even when it’s uncomfortable? The Independent Monitoring Boards (IMB) are recruiting volunteers from all backgrounds to help make sure prisoners are treated fairly and supported to turn their lives around.
Every prison in England and Wales has an IMB made up of ordinary people appointed by ministers to be the public’s eyes and ears. As a Board member you’ll visit your local prison regularly, talk with people in custody, observe conditions, and raise concerns on issues such as healthcare, safety and wellbeing.
No particular qualifications are required – just good judgement, empathy and a commitment to fairness. Volunteers get full training, plus reimbursement for travel and approved expenses. If you live within about 45 minutes of a prison and can commit to at least two visits a month, this is a genuine chance to make a real difference.
The next national recruitment campaign runs from 7 January 2026. You can start the application process and see current opportunities (including roles near you) here:
