Free advice and support available to adult and young carers

Every day across the East Riding, thousands of people quietly support a family member, friend or neighbour with everyday tasks, medication, appointments or emotional support. Free advice, practical support and services designed to make life easier are available for both adult and young carers.

Carers come from all walks of life, they may be adults supporting partners or parents, parents caring for children with additional needs, or young carers helping to look after a family member.

Support for adult carers

Adult carers can access help through the Carers’ Support Service, which offers free information, advice and guidance. Support is available regardless of whether the person being cared for receives services from the council.

The service is there to help and can provide advice about a person’s rights as a carer, help accessing benefits, information about local support groups and more.

The Carers Support Centre can be found at County Hall, Cross Street, Beverley, HU17 9BA, Monday to Thursday 9.30 am – 4.30 pm and Friday 9.30 am – 4.00 pm.

Support for young carers

Young carers (under 18) can speak to their school or college, GP, Early Help, or contact the young carers service directly by emailing: family.help.young.carers@eastriding.gov.uk or visiting: Young carers

Getting support early can make a real difference to a person’s wellbeing and help someone to continue caring with confidence.

Councillor Jonathan Owen, Cabinet Member for Adults, Health and Care at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: ‘’While caring roles are invaluable, they can also have a significant impact on everyday life, including work, education, physical health and emotional wellbeing.

‘’As a council, we want everyone to be aware of the vast range of help that is available and support as many carers as possible to live fulfilling lives.’’
