The government has announced plans to provide more than 100,000 job and training opportunities each year for young people, as part of its wider industrial strategy.
The announcement, published on 19 October 2026, sets out how government departments, employers and industry representatives will work together to create additional routes into employment.
The plans focus on industries where demand for skilled workers is expected to grow, including construction, professional services, technology and defence.
What opportunities are being introduced?
The government’s plans include:
- 22,400 new apprenticeships annually for under-25s in professional and business services.
- 40,000 construction work placements each year.
- Expanded opportunities in digital technologies and defence.
- Greater involvement from employers in developing practical training and work experience.
The proposals also emphasise the role of local authorities, combined authorities and skills partnerships in ensuring training responds to local employment needs.
Supporting young people into employment
Access to meaningful work experience and training can help young people build confidence, develop practical skills and make informed decisions about their future careers.
The announcement is particularly relevant to organisations supporting young people who face barriers to employment, education or training.
Youth organisations, community groups and employment support services may have opportunities to work with local employers and training providers to help young people access these pathways.
The government has indicated that further sector-specific plans will follow as part of its industrial strategy.
