HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has launched an improved online service designed to make it quicker and easier for people to register for Self Assessment.
The updated service allows customers who are new to Self Assessment to register through their Personal Tax Account, with improvements including pre-populated information, online support, the ability to save progress and return later, and confirmation by email or text once registration is complete.
Customers using the new service can also receive their Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) in their online account within 72 hours, rather than waiting up to 15 days for it to arrive by post.
Key dates
Anyone who needs to submit a Self Assessment tax return for the first time for the 2025 to 2026 tax year must register by 5 October 2026. Registering after this date could result in a penalty.
The deadline for submitting an online Self Assessment tax return and paying any tax owed for 2025 to 2026 is 31 January 2027.
HMRC is also reminding people who are unsure whether they need to complete a tax return to use its free online checking service before registering.
