Officers from East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Domestic Violence and Abuse Partnership (DVAP) service, will host information stands to raise awareness about domestic violence, and support available.
Stands will be held at venues across the East Riding, throughout October, from Goole Market Hall on Friday 2 October to South Holderness Leisure Centre on Friday 30 October.
They will also be present at Beverley Tesco on Tuesday 6, Bridlington Morrisons on Wednesday 7, and Anlaby Morrisons on Tuesday 13 October.
The information stands will be present at leisure centres across the East Riding, including at Haltemprice Leisure Centre on Monday 26, Hornsea Leisure Centre on Tuesday 27, Goole Leisure Centre on Wednesday 28, and Francis Scaife Leisure Centre in Pocklington on Thursday 29 October. They will also be present at the Meridian Centre in Withernsea on Monday 5 October.
Residents are encouraged to speak to officers and learn more about domestic violence and abuse, how to get support for themselves or others, or to recognise the signs of abuse.
The work forms part of Domestic Abuse Awareness Month, this October. This year’s theme of ‘spot the signs, start the conversation,’ focuses on the vital role everyone can play in recognising abuse and helping those affected.
Residents are encouraged to be aware of the signs that someone may be experiencing abuse.
This can include changes in behaviour, mood or confidence, withdrawal from family and social networks, or unexplained injuries or frequent ‘accidents’
It can also involve a partner who is overly controlling, jealous or checks up constantly, or limited access to money, transport or communication.
Residents are encouraged to support friends and family, including listening without judgment, reassuring them that they are not alone, and that the abuse is not their fault. It is also vital to ensure victims know they are not isolated and that support is available.
Councillor Lyn Healing, East Riding of Yorkshire Council cabinet member for communities and public protection said: “This is a key initiative to raise awareness of domestic violence and abuse across our communities, to support victims and encourage everyone to recognise the signs of abuse.”
“Nobody should suffer alone and the council’s DVAP website provides information and support. In urgent matters, where there is a belief of immediate danger, always call the police on 999.”
Professional and self-referrals (calling about your own situation) can be made by calling 01482 396368 or completing the online DVAP self-referral form.
