New online service makes sharing basic DBS check results easier

The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) has announced improvements to its online service, making it easier for individuals to share their basic DBS check results with employers and other third parties.

Announced on 22 October 2026, the changes give applicants greater control over how and when their results are shared, helping to simplify recruitment and pre-employment checking processes.

Basic DBS checks provide information about an individual’s unspent criminal convictions and conditional cautions. They are commonly used by employers and organisations when assessing someone’s suitability for a particular role.

The improved online sharing arrangements could be particularly useful for voluntary and community organisations, charities and small employers seeking to reduce administrative work during recruitment.

What does this mean for organisations?

Organisations that request basic DBS checks can benefit from a more straightforward process for receiving results directly from applicants.

However, employers and volunteer coordinators should continue to establish which level of DBS check is appropriate for each role. The new sharing arrangements relate specifically to basic DBS checks and do not replace the requirements for standard or enhanced checks where these are eligible or necessary.
