Parents urged to extend Child Benefit before 31 August

Parents and carers of 16 to 19-year-olds who are continuing in approved education or training are being reminded to extend their Child Benefit claim before 31 August 2026.

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) says payments will stop automatically if parents who need to confirm their teenager’s plans do not respond by the deadline. Claims can be extended quickly through the HMRC app or GOV.UK.

Child Benefit can continue for young people undertaking full-time, non-advanced education such as A levels, T levels and NVQs up to Level 3, as well as certain approved training schemes. Parents only need to take action if their teenager is starting a new course or qualifying training this September.

Child Benefit is currently worth up to £1,406.60 a year for the eldest or only child, and up to £930.80 for each additional child.
